The mask spirits, Fern, Darmani, and Mikau, will occassionally make cameos in narration brackets. Their thoughts cannot be percieved by anybody other than Link, unless your character can see or sense spirits.
They haunt him, essentially. It's nice.
After the events of Ocarina of Time, Link set off on his journey to find his fairy companion, Navi, and found himself all over Hyrule. He took little odd jobs as a way of sustaining himself, and eventually realized that fighting monsters for what little he could worked pretty well.
Eventually, in a scuffle with some bandits, Link lost his right eye- barely managing to drag himself to a nearby village and recieve treatment for it. The doctor, a man with violet hair and red eyes, having heard of Link's reputation, warned him to head home so as to not "lose what he had left of his childhood."
Reluctantly, Link returned to what left he had of "home," heading back to the Lost Woods- only to fall down a tree into Termina.
Three days passed in what felt like a year, and Link, thoroughly exhausted from the festival activities, decided Hyrule could wait for him.
He stayed in Termina for two years, living with Anju and Kafei, helping them run Stockpot Inn to the best of his ability as he recuperated. Link came to view both of them as parents, though he doesn't really understand the feeling himself.
That being said, with his spirit tethered to Hyrule, the day he would come to leave was rather inevitable. Link, now 13, made his way back to home, only to realize that he didn't really have one anymore.
Too old to live in the forest but too young to establish himself anywhere else, Link took up residence in a tent at the bottom of Gerudo Canyon, where he planned on staying for the rest of his forseeable future.
Said "plans" were interrupted, however, by a certain royal princess making a diplomatic visit to the Gerudo. With a little (a lot) of persuasian, Zelda managed to convince him to return with them to the castle, worn out and tattered and a whole lot less emotionally stable than when he'd first left.
Under the condition that he join the royal guard to put his extensive skills to use in service of the kingdom, the King of Hyrule allowed Link to stay.
A year into his time at the castle, Zelda asked he be appointed their personal knight, and with Link very rapidly making his way through the ranks, he was handed that title, as well as the privilige of being named captain of the royal guard- the youngest in known history, at age 16.
Though he works as the captain of the guard, Impa takes care of most of his responsibilities- and as a result, he's free to do whatever the hell he wants, whether that be traveling through time or visiting parts of the extended multiverse, which is what he does now.
